I forced myself to read Watchmen because I knew that the movie was coming out and people were making a big deal about it. It took awhile, but I finally made it through, but it was quite hard at first since I wasn't drawn into the story at all. Only when the story started delving into everyone's background did I really get interested, and then by the end I was hooked.
However, that's not to say that the end (which is brilliant) makes up for the long road there. The layout is absolutely boring. That same 3 x 3 layout every single page? It's like reading a book without paragraphs. Sure, there were times when the panels got "expanded," but that still failed to cover up the basic 3 x 3 structure.
The pirate story is crap. I don't care if it's an allegory, it's just crap.
Honestly, I'm still looking forward to the movie just to get the story in a more streamlined fashion. I'm overjoyed that they've already cut the pirate story out of the main movie and releasing it as its own thing on some Intro to Watchmen DVD.
