Thanks for the info--now that you mention it, Tolson's name sounds familiar from Underworld, though as I recall DeLillo focuses on them attending the Black & White Ball--the full story is fascinating.

Actually, it makes me think of "Angels in America" and of Roy Kohn going on in it about the difference between a homosexual and a man who fucks men is that a homosexual doesn't have any power or influence. Hoover was Director for Life, and he has to have known where 40 years' worth of bodies were buried around Washington; I'd imagine that the presidents after Eisenhower were intimidated by him. So even though persecution was the official policy, since Hoover was the person in charge of prosecuting that official policy--quis custodet ipsos custodes?
