What I didn't quite get around to saying in the post, because I couldn't articulate it to myself until now, is that Invictus is at heart a very simple story--while the racial tensions depicted aren't minimized, they are clearly subordinated to the sports movie structure in a way that is obviously (at least to me) cinematic rather than realistic. At a few points I thought to myself that things couldn't have happened the way they were being depicted on the screen. I don't think the movie tells an unworthy story, but it does choose not to engage the thornier issues it raises.
