We could go with 'individuality', I think - collapse of the πολις system in favor of empire, decreased chance for political activity, rise of Stoicism and Epicureanism. Everyone was looking a little closer to home than before, at any rate.

Mostly we notice that Greek drama was performed at religious festivals and think that therefore it must have been religious; I think it's kind of funny that by the same reasoning, tragedy must have been political.
