CLAMP have outdone themselves with this one.

Spider-lady: It seems you obtained it.

Mokona: Since the spider-lady's come, we'll break out the good sake!
Monoka will drink too!

Spider-lady: That would be wonderful.

FX: Puffing up

Spider-lady: Well,
You look like a brush, pipe-fox.

FX: Hissing

Watanuki: Please,
Come in.

Spider-lady: Are you sure?
Not in the front room?

Watanuki: There are other devices.
Besides…
-------------
!!! page 04
Watanuki: The item you requested is here.

Spider-lady: Certainly,

It's a pearl made from that girl's tears.

Watanuki: That person…
-------------
!!! page 05
Spider-lady: What do you think?

Watanuki: …A mermaid.

That is…

A person who ate the flesh of one.
-------------
!!! page 06
Spider-lady: Correct.

What are humans who have eaten mermaids and live a long time called, I wonder.

Watanuki: "Yaobikuni"? [See T/N.]

Spider-lady: Yes,

That.

You're not the owner of this store for nothing.

Watanuki: Only for a few years.

Spider-lady: Only,
For now.
-------------
!!! page 07
Spider-lady: But, time is passing.
It's a small thread now, but it will gradually grow larger.

People will age,

And before long die.

Watanuki: I will die too.

Spider-lady: But, you will certainly live a very long time.
Longer than the people around you.
-------------
!!! page 08
Spider-lady: Like that yaobikuni.

Even though she understand that,
No matter how often she repeated it,

That girl searched for people to live with,
Forever.

But,
Now,

That girl might not be able to create a crimson pearl any more.

Since she wasn't with the human for long this time.
-------------
!!! page 09
Watanuki: Did you know she was being abused?

Spider-lady: Yes.
And that those wounds weren't healing.

In the past,

If she healed the wounds she took immediately, so that they wouldn't worry,
The humans in that place would flee from her.

She said that when someone was with her she'd be careful not to do that anymore.

If the one by her side was human, that is.

Even though the pain was like that too, if she didn't heal.

-------------
!!! page 10
Watanuki: …You…

FX: Smoothly

Spider-lady: This wound is still like this, for now.

FX: Rapid

Someday, like that girl's,
Your wounds may heal immediately too.

If your power grows even stronger.

You don't need these any more, do you?
-------------
!!! page 11
Spider-lady: Even if you don't have them, you can "see."

If that happens, will you be human, I wonder.

Or will you be the same as us?
-------------
!!! page 12
Watanuki: I don't know.

But,
Even if I were no longer human,

I think that would be fine, if this power could help the people and existences I care about even a little.

Spider-lady: And that's why you inherited the store?

Watanuki: …That's right.
-------------
!!! page 13
Watanuki: It might not be correct, but it's what I chose,
So that I wouldn't have regrets.

So

Please go meet
With that person.

When she handed over this pearl, she said--
-------------
!!! page 14
Watanuki: "You too are the same as me, aren't you?"

Spider-lady: That is because that, just like that girl, you won't age either.

Watanuki: I don't think that it was just that.

That girl is still waiting,

Even though her heart is becoming all injuries.

Spider-lady: For what?
-------------
!!! page 15
Watanuki: In that person's case,

For someone to live with.

Of course,

You are the one who will choose.
-------------
!!! page 16
Spider-lady: You really have
Become uncute.

[T/N] So, Wikipedia tells me that the yaobikuni is a legend common throughout Japan, with local variations. Essentially, in a village by the sea someone finds a merperson lying on the beach, and since the villagers know that eating the flesh would give long life and eternal beauty, but since they thought something was off, they made a show of eating the flesh but discarded it on the way home. But the yaobikuni's father didn't hear what was said, and so his daughter had a taste of the meat. She was beautiful, but she outlived her husband and her family, and the villagers began to shun her. She wandered throughout the country helping people, but eventually retired into a cave, setting the world at nought.

No, really, I don't think there could possibly be a more apt legend against which Watanuki could be compared.
