Ovid just seems to be a little too popular for too long to have been an equivalent to Sei--aside from being exiled during his own lifetime, his reputation has been positive ever since. Sei was thought to be personally scandalous, and her writing has been excluded from the consensus about what constitutes the essence of Heian literature, both of which make me think of Catullus. Also, I ♥ Catullus a lot.

How is the McCullough book?
