Yeah, it's Bujold. I adore Curse of Chalion but am kind of meh about its sequels. It's primarily interesting for the in-world theology. The first book is really good about having a lot of theological debates in a world where there are solid answers to the questions; in the later books everyone knows enough about the deities that there's less conflict.
