I think my favorite of his movies is Millennium Actress, for reasons having to do with fans and female agency, but as much as parts of the ending of Paprika make me grind my teeth, there's an exuberance and a sheer imaginative verve to it that MA doesn't quite manage. I don't recall the exam table scene that you mention; it's been years since I've watched it.
