The weird thing though is that it's not about Reilly learning what her emotions are! It's about her emotions, including Sadness, learning that sadness is important. Even though Sadness has read the manuals, she herself doesn't even understand that. Just on a storytelling level, it was weird, and meant that the movie wasn't all pulling in the same direction at the same time.
