Doctor Who 174: "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit"

This is a much more enjoyable version of the general plot of Prometheus.

This is also the first story this season that actually sold me on Rose and the Doctor. They like, trust, and respect each other, and in particular their trust in each other is shown to be correct by their actions at the climax of the story, when the Doctor explicitly rejects treating Rose as someone who lacks her own agency and smashes the pillars of the Beast's prison. He doesn't predict exactly how Rose will react, since he doesn't know the particulars of her situation, but he has faith that she will correctly work out and take the right course of action, which she does. Uncoincidentally, this episode also dips into the Doctor's issues (he is responsible for the death of the Time Lords, thanks for bringing that up, Satan!), but gives him enough to do so that he doesn't spiral down into the pit of despair. Note as well the recurring fantasy of him and Rose playing house together. It's the kind of thing that they both want to want, on some level, but if they did really want it they'd already have done it.

I was deeply amused that Torchwood is still operating in the C42 (and still serving the Empire!), though despite calling themselves the Torchwood Archive they have evidently forgotten about the Doctor. I presume that Jack's files were destroyed at some point in the intervening two-odd millennia, if he didn't destroy them himself.

The stuff with the Ood is just bad, though I also keep calling them the Aqualish in my head, since they look rather similar. Presumably, as with the Beast's prediction that Rose will die in battle, we'll see more of them anon.

Final note: are the Doctor’s pinstripes TARDIS blue?
