2019 in Vids
Happy New Year! I spent the holidays in Japan with my brother and had a very good time, though I find myself unable to summon much more than dread at the advent of 2020. The work has to be done regardless, I suppose.
The Vids
February
Poor Sucker (The Manchurian Candidate [2004]) - Festivids 2018
Information Travels Faster (RDJ Holmes)
April
Caribbean Blue (seaQuest DSV) - Spring Equinox 2019
May
Renegades (Star Wars)
June
Rome (Star Trek: Discovery)
August
In the 99 (Nolan Batman)
Princesses Night Out (She-Ra & the Princesses of Power)
October
Another One Bites the Dust (Inglourious Basterds) - Autumn Equinox 2019
November
The Book of Love (Good Omens)
The Questions
Favorite
Hard to choose, as I think I made some very good vids this year. My personal choices are between Information Travels Faster, which I had in my mind for years, and Caribbean Blue, which came out exactly as I wanted it and for which canon review was a delight.
Least Favorite
Princesses Night Out, which needed another week or so of work.
Most Successful
A tie between Renegades and The Book of Love, both of which were for very active fandoms and which, dare I say, are fun.
Most Underappreciated by the Universe
I do think In the 99 would have made a bigger splash if I'd premiered it at VividCon (RIP), as opposed to at a new con at a panel premiere. Ah well.
Most Fun to Make
I had a lot of fun with quite a few of these--Rome and Information Travels Faster were both quite a lot of fun for different reasons.
Hardest Vid to Make
In the 99 took a lot of work and also was very intensive on my hard drive--I had to export the timeline to view more than ten seconds at a time because the footage was so large. Not worth the 1080p quality bump, imo.
The Things I Learned This Year
I've started using the in-app color grading that Premiere offers, and it's worked out well so far. I've been somewhat subtle with it, but I used it extensively in Renegades and In the 99 to make the multiple sources look a bit more coherent. (With Renegades this was mostly a matter of regrading Solo and Rogue One to match the mainline films; with In the 99 I was regrading a lot of the Batman Begins shots.)
Planning for Next Year
I released nine vids this year, which is an all-time highwater mark that I don't expect to surpass in 2020; I'm sticking with six as a goal, though I already have three on tap (well, two and a half, since I haven't finished my Festivids assignment) so I'm probably lowballing myself. I'm hoping to attend FanWorks for the first time this year, and looking forward to a full menu of con vidshow submissions.
