I realized that I forgot to thank you for the translations--I'm sorry about that. (I've been participating in these discussions far more than I should, and it's showing.)
You're right that Watanuki is likely going to live out the rest of his life span, thus honoring Yuuko's wish that he go on existing, but I can't help but think that he's going against some of her unspoken wishes. He isn't trying to maintain his former life while running the store--and considering how coldly he treated Doumeki, he's likely going to cut off relations with his friends (probably in order to avoid "hurting" them). A good deal of the series was spent on his creating relationships with other beings and realizing how much he meant to others, and he clearly isn't honoring that right now.
As such, I think this was a horrible idea on his part; we'll see what CLAMP thinks of it soon. (For all we know, they could have his friends visit him in the store while he lives out the rest of his life waiting for Yuuko, and try to present the whole thing as hunky-dory. They've had another character wait for a long time to meet her beloved, so they could very well do it again.)

The characters blend together seamlessly, so I'm not surprised about that. You know, I didn't mention this before on the comms, but I personally believe that he was meant to look like a combination of Clow and Yuuko (his eyes and build are very similar to Yuuko's, after all). If that were so, it could tie in with very well with the idea of F.W.R. being Clow and Yuuko's son, since it would add another layer of troubles between them all (as it would imply that Fei Wang was somehow a defective or unwanted son, and Watanuki represented an ideal child). It sounds cliché, though.
