Watanuki: ...Doumeki.

Doumeki: What?

!!! page 02-03
Watanuki: ...I will succeed to this shop.
----------------------
!!! page 04
Watanuki: Yuuko-san said that she would grant my first wish,

But I won't get rid of the power to see spirits.

With this power,

And with this shop, I can grant the wishes of different people and of things that aren't people,
And protect this shop.

I'll keep it for a long, long time.

!!! page 05
Watanuki: Until I can meet Yuuko-san again.
----------------------
!!! page 06
Doumeki: You'll do the store while you're attending school?

Watanuki: I won't go.
----------------------
!!! page 07
Watanuki: That's not it.

I can't go.

I can't leave this store any more.

Doumeki: ...What do you mean?
----------------------

Watanuki: That

Is the price.

!!! page 09
Watanuki: Because I've decided to hold it
Forever,

I've decided to pay the "time" within me as the price. [TN: "Time" written "moments."]

I can't leave the store any more.

I won't age any more.

Doumeki: Does that mean you won't die?
----------------------
!!! page 10
Watanuki: There's no living thing that doesn't die.

No matter how much we wish, people die.
----------------------
!!! page 11
Watanuki: So
I too will die.
Someday, absolutely.

But
Until then

Watanuki: Until I can meet Yuuko-san,

For a long,
Long time,

I will be in charge of this shop.

Doumeki: So this

Is his
...Choice, huh?
----------------------
!!! page 14
Doumeki: So therefore this, only once--
No, that there will be no more than one necessity to use it.

Certainly...

I can't use it on him.

FX: Cough cough cough

Cough...

FX: Inhaling

It's actually downright freaky how much Watanuki looks like Clow. Also, how perfect a touch is it that he coughs the first time? Can you still get lung cancer if you're not aging? Watanuki, futoukou! Sort of.

There is one particular cell that had me staring at it because he looks SO much like Clow Reed. This chapter also reminded me of the splash page where Watanuki is sitting in a tree wearing Clow Reed's coat like he's wearing Yuuko's in this one...

*face palm* Watanuki became the female Yuuko in one chapter...

thanks for translating ^^

That was what, vol. 23 of TRC, the deluxe cover? It was totally prophetic.

It isn't deluxe cover of vol. 23, is deluxe cover of vol. 22

So is the thought that Domeki is going to stay in the shop with Watanuki by using the egg on himself only hopeful thinking....

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I started wondering something similar late last night. Someone's got to stay with Watanuki and make drinks.

[identity profile] lodelco.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I half expect Doumeki to stay with Watanuki but I'm still confused as to what his feelings for Watanuki are. Both of them are stubborn shits to each other and while we know that Doumeki has been saving Watanuki's life Doumeki hasn't exactly given himself to Watanuki has he?

[identity profile] ariadnechan.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks and doumeki mus to stay!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised that you think Watanuki looks a lot like Clow in this chapter--I thought he looked much more like Yuuko. (Actually, I just found out from [livejournal.com profile] la_vie_noire that Clow is drawn by Mokona, unlike Watanuki and most of the other male characters who are drawn by Tsubaki Nekoi. Strange.) I guess I'm more struck by their radically different builds and heights than by their facial expressions.

I initially thought that Watanuki simply couldn't believe that Yuuko was dead, but after reading this translation it dawned on me that he may be waiting in the store to die and meet her at the Far Shore. If that's the truth, he's going against the most important lesson that Yuuko taught him: that he shouldn't die, due to all of the people who would be hurt by his leaving them. How could he so blatantly and selfishly ignore Yuuko's last wish, after all that he went through?

Or waiting for her to be reincarnated.

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn as to whether this is a good idea on Watanuki's part or not.

I think there's a difference, though, between Watanuki accepting death as part of a normal life (inasmuch as life in the shop is normal) and wanting to not exist this very moment--which I think has been averted, and which is what Yuuko didn't want.

I think in the interview I translated Clamp said their drawing styles started to merge toward Nekoi's in these manga? He does look like Yuuko in some frames, but for me it's the Clow resemblance that stands out.

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I realized that I forgot to thank you for the translations--I'm sorry about that. (I've been participating in these discussions far more than I should, and it's showing.)

You're right that Watanuki is likely going to live out the rest of his life span, thus honoring Yuuko's wish that he go on existing, but I can't help but think that he's going against some of her unspoken wishes. He isn't trying to maintain his former life while running the store--and considering how coldly he treated Doumeki, he's likely going to cut off relations with his friends (probably in order to avoid "hurting" them). A good deal of the series was spent on his creating relationships with other beings and realizing how much he meant to others, and he clearly isn't honoring that right now.

As such, I think this was a horrible idea on his part; we'll see what CLAMP thinks of it soon. (For all we know, they could have his friends visit him in the store while he lives out the rest of his life waiting for Yuuko, and try to present the whole thing as hunky-dory. They've had another character wait for a long time to meet her beloved, so they could very well do it again.)

The characters blend together seamlessly, so I'm not surprised about that. You know, I didn't mention this before on the comms, but I personally believe that he was meant to look like a combination of Clow and Yuuko (his eyes and build are very similar to Yuuko's, after all). If that were so, it could tie in with very well with the idea of F.W.R. being Clow and Yuuko's son, since it would add another layer of troubles between them all (as it would imply that Fei Wang was somehow a defective or unwanted son, and Watanuki represented an ideal child). It sounds cliché, though.

Don't worry about the thanks--I both appreciate them and feel weird about accepting them, which is why I tend not to reply specifically to thanks-only comments. Thanks, Japan, for giving me this strange hangup (for the same reason I'm also bad at saying "You're welcome." I'm way more likely to say "No prob" or "Don't mention it" or the equivalent).

A good deal of the series was spent on his creating relationships with other beings and realizing how much he meant to others, and he clearly isn't honoring that right now.

I agree completely, and was too lazy to write out my personal equivalent of what you said before. I don't think Yuuko anticipated Watanuki's strong personal affection for her (aw, Yuuko!). I hope that Doumeki, Mr. Voice of Reason, is able to find some sort of solution with the egg--I think that Watanuki's basic idea isn't bad, but the impression given of his execution of it raises a lot of red flags.

I personally believe that he was meant to look like a combination of Clow and Yuuko (his eyes and build are very similar to Yuuko's, after all).

I would buy this, though I was thinking today that technically Watanuki was brought into being to fulfill the roles Jr. wouldn't due to being absent--so what was Jr. originally supposed to do? Be friends with Doumeki and Himawari? I suppose, since Yuuko is the source of the anomaly, it's not really possible to know objectively, but it's still an interesting thing to wonder about.

I think in any case Watanuki accepting death puts him several legs up on FWR.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comment about his attachment made me realize, she's been putting on an act in front of all the holic and tsubasa regulars that masks personal concern with caprice and selfishness. Though Kurogane appears to be the only person who actually bought the act.

I'm guessing that was a combination of guilt and feeling it was necessary to leave less of a mark when she eventually left...which makes her and Watanuki pretty much the same. Darn Yuuko and her double standards.

I'm not sure about him being meant to meet Himawari. He was attracted to her solely on a subconscious death wish. If it had been Syaoran, he most likely would have let her avoid him like she did everyone, and without Watanuki she would never have known Doumeki was a safe zone. She would have spent her life alone without the anomaly that created Watanuki.

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2009-08-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly re: Yuuko's act. She did have limits to her powers, but she stretched them pretty far for all our heroes, and I would definitely agree that it was at least partly guilt, since it was out of love (or some kind of attachment) for her that FWR twisted everything out of shape.

That's a good point about Himawari. I still find it a bit weird to contemplate Jr. being best buddies with Doumeki, though.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Doumeki didn't necessarily *have* to befriend Syaoran, either. Himawari just has issues that meant he almost definitely wouldn't have.

A little bit off-topic, but I was wondering what your stand on using your translation for scans is?

Thank you in advance for your answer ^_^

Hey--thanks for asking! (I know at least one group uses my scripts without ever having actually asked me, though they do credit me.)

So yes, the answer is, Go right ahead, with credit to starlady38 or Electra, whichever.

Oh, I'm from Mangahelpers and we take those stuff pretty seriously so I have to make sure first.
