Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim versus the World. Dir. Edgar Wright, 2010.

The essential plot of this movie is the same as the comic books. They don't shake out quite the same--by the halfway point, there is a lot of divergence going on in the minor details, partly because of time constraints--but yeah, Scott Pilgrim still has to fight Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes for the chance to be her boyfriend.

It's a given that any movie adaptation will never be as awesome as the source, and for major 4th wall points at one point the movie has Comeau saying that the movie could never be as awesome as the comic books, but as an adaptation it's pretty damn good. It's also the most sheer fun I've had at the movies in a while.

My favorite characters are still Wallace Wells and Knives Chau, and I was happy that they were both featured prominently; the movie makes Knives even more awesome, and also I thought made Scott more awesome too--though also, as someone else on my r-list pointed out or linked to recently, it makes him more of an ass, too. A lot of the side characters and almost all of the fourth wall-breaking stuff were compressed and/or cut, but some of them come off better for that, particularly Julie Powers, who is much more awesome in the movie.

I was ambivalent about what the movie did to Ramona--on the whole I think she is less awesome than she is in the books, and I really didn't need Gideon stroking her hair continuously, blech. But she is still pretty cool, and the movie on the whole is a hoot, though I was sad that the Katayanagi twins were essentially a plot coupon to Gideon and that the fight with Matthew Patel did not feature Scott's entire party breaking out into song and synchronized dance as in the comics. Awesome soundtrack, though, too. The movie definitely brings out the video quality of the comics' video game aspects, which was pretty damn awesome. Jason Schwarzmann was nearly perfect as Gideon too, all in all it was great.

P.S. Via [personal profile] umadoshi, have this interview with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ellen Wong about their thoughts on their characters and on the movie's original ending.

I saw this today with my friends and came out grinning for at least an hour afterwards. My favorite bits wre all the pokes at hipsters (Vegan academy!) and all the video game bits which felt like they were ripped directly from my childhood. I haven't read the comics but now I really want to see more of the characters so perhaps I'll see if they're in the library.
