The McCullough translation is hands-down the best in English (I've started reading my own copy of it myself), but as always, she sacrifices the occasional textual crux to readability. Which is fine for her purposes, but was less helpful for ours.

You could totally read the Heike in the original, it's practically modern compared to the Genji or the Kokinshu.
