I'll keep updating it as the series goes along. /eta ETA^2: Fixed character name & line attributions in the last few pages thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sjou and [livejournal.com profile] la_vie_noire! /eta

That heart,
Lightly,
Supply--

Chapter Five: The Tokugawa Blood Contract
-------------
!!! page 02
Kojyûrô: Masamune-sama,
Even your face appears undisciplined; you've reached your limit.

FX: Happy drunk

Date: Shut up.

Right now I'm admiring the cutest person in the world.

FX: Glare

FX: Growling

FX: Air of hatred
-------------
!!! page 03
Sakura: Sorry for the wait!

FX: Grin

FX: Surprised

Hana: Uumen! [TN: This is a noodle dish invented in Shiroishi, Miyagi prefecture; there's an image here. I'm quite certain that this is in here as a sign of sympathy for the victims of the Tôhoku earthquake & tsunami.]

Kojyûrô: I'm sorry for not changing the souvenir for the better. [TN: B/c Date was from Sendai, up in the Tôhoku]

FX: Writhing

FX: Quivering with excitement

Hana: Uumen!
Uumen!

Sakura: It's the best souvenir for Hana.

FX: Eyes shining

Hana: Yeah!

Date: Hana reaaally is
Cute--
-------------
!!! page 04
Hana: Thanks for the food!!

Chikahito: Sure,

Dig in!

Tachibana: You say

"Dig in"--

FX: Menacing

FX: Menacing

Tachibana: What are you doing, carelessly promoting noodles,
You freeloader, you--

Chikahito: Ye,
Uh,
Uh…mm…
-------------
!!! page 05
FX: Menacing

Kojyûrô: The ingredients are meat and miso.

Hidetsugu: It's delicious.

FX: Yay, yay!

Sakura: This is your handmade cuisine, right, Chikahito-kun?

Mikoto: You're very skilled.

Date: Hana,
You're the best!

Tachibana: You got Hana burned, and you came back unwounded--

FX: Glaring

Chikahito: I…I'm sorry!

Hana: Chikahito isn't in the wrong.

Chikahito: Hana-san.
-------------
!!! page 06
Hana: Besides, Tachibana, you made me wear my coat, so I was fine.

Chikahito: "Coat"?
You mean--

Sakura: That worrywart Tachibana put a spell on it.

Date: And I put on a good showing,
Didn't I, Hana?

Hana: Yes,
Thanks.

FX: Grin

FX: Nervous

FX: Staring
-------------
!!! page 07
Hana: Stretch them out,

It's delicious.

Chikahito: R-right!

Kojyûrô: I'm stretching them out.

FX: Disappointment

Date: I wanted Hana to say that to me.

Hana: You too,
Tachibana.

Tachibana: You really don't feel the pain, Hana?

Hana: Nope,
I'm fine.

FX: Fingers flapping
-------------
!!! page 08
Hidetsugu: You're a changed person when it comes to Hana, Tachibana, just like always.

Mikoto: Seriously.

Tachibana: It's not just the freeloader!
It's your fault for acting selfishly too, Hidetsugu.

FX: Glaring

FX: Chuckles

Hidetsugu: I just wanted to convey my greetings to the new resident of the Urashichiken.

Chikahito: Speaking of that, the delivery--

Mikoto: It was you.

Chikahito: Huh?

Tachibana: I knew it, you're too dumb.

Sakura: You could say that more gently, you know.

Mikoto: Besides, he won't hear it if you say it praisingly.
-------------
!!! page 09
Hidetsugu: Chikahito-kun is special.

Enough that Hana called him back here from Tokyo with myôhô, at any rate.

Date: SERIOUSLY!!!

FX: Sudden

Date: Bring out Kurikara, Kojyûrô!

Chikahito: Augh!!

FX: Sudden
-------------
!!! page 10
Hana: If you hurt Chikahito,

I'll be angry.

Kojyûrô: That Hana-san will be angry--

Date: I don't want you to be angry!

FX: All right, all right

FX: Auuggh

Hidetsugu: He really is special.

Mikoto: What did he really come here to do?

FX: Sparkling

Date: To make out with Hana!

Kojyûrô: Masamune-sama.

FX: Menacing
-------------
!!! page 11
Date: And so!

FX: Billowing menace

Date: About the Tokugawa!!

FX: Twitch

Chikahito: Tachibana-san…?

Hidetsugu: …This is a problem for the oni information network.
-------------
!!! page 12
Date: More than the human world per se, it's troublesome.
Since it doesn't use email or phones.

Chikahito: Really?

Mikoto: Yes.

If only the power is strong enough, no matter how far the distance between, things can be read.
It's possible to defend against as well, but that too depends on the strength of power.

Kojyûrô: And among them there are those skilled at reading hearts--
There are oni who can read human hearts, not just those of oni.

Chikahito: There really are various oni-san, huh.

Hidetsugu: Thanks to that, connected through Mikoto, I was able to find out the way to obtain Lord Nobunaga's corpse and Mara.

Mikoto: Through my power.
-------------
!!! page 13
Hidetsugu: As expected, Mikoto.

Date: That!

Hana!
That!

Chikahito: When you say "connected," does that mean Mikoto-sama didn't find them?
That--

FX: Purring

FX: Meow

Chikahito: The method of obtaining the strongest oni.

Hidetsugu: No.

Mikoto: The one who is ignobly with the Tokugawa, and the oni who has ignobly made

…a blood contract with them.
-------------
!!! page 14
Date: Hey,
You didn't just say "is." [TN: Mikoto uses a humble rather than a plain verb.]

Chikahito: …There's something with the Tokugawa and Tachibana-san.

Earlier, too…
-------------
!!! page 15
Date: Ieyasu was certainly a crafty devil,

But he…

Chikahito: The one among the Tokugawa who was the most eminent and had the deepest blood connection--
Would that be Iemitsu?

Date: No, it wouldn't.

Mikoto: Ieyasu

Became the Tôshô Daigongen, didn't he?

Hidetsugu: Signals were given,
And with just that, he was enshrined at that amazing Tôshô-gû--

Various things. [TN: Thinking about it, 'signals' probably refers to Iemitsu famously being dream-haunted by Ieyasu.]

Chikahito: So,
Now,
Ieyasu-san is--

Date: He's not here.
-------------
!!! page 16
Chikahito: So, who…

Sakura: Tofu.

Chikahito: Huh!?

Sakura: Could you go buy some tofu, Chikahito-kun?

Chikahito: Y…yes?

Sakura: Don't you want to eat Kyoto yudôfu? [TN: This is a famous Kyoto dish, involving tofu in hot water, served principally in winter. It's very subtly flavored, even more than most Kyoto cuisine, but delicious. pictures here]

Chikahito: I do want to eat it, but--
Now?

Sakura: The stores are going to close soon.

Sorry.

Chikahito: Al--
All right.

Sakura: Three blocks each of silk and cotton,
And two of kumiage. [TN: These are kinds of tofu and yuba.]

Chikahito: Right!

FX: Standing

Hana: Take care!
-------------
!!! page 17
Chikahito: I'll be right back.

FX: Footsteps

FX: Doors sliding

FX: Door closing

Sakura: These aren't things

That a kid who's just arrived here should be allowed to hear yet.
-------------

Sakura: About Tokugawa…Iemitsu.
-------------
!!! page 19
Tachibana: …Hana.
-------------
!!! page 20
Chikahito: Three of silk and cotton tofu,

And two of kumiage.

…Wait,
Huh?

Was that a conversation they didn't want to let me hear?

There was a kind of dangerous feeling.

It might be better not to have heard.

Why am I a little bit sad?

…Even though I've still only lived there for one night so far.
-------------
!!! page 21
FX: Huh!?

Chikahito: Are you all right?

FX: Running footsteps

That's a really pretty boy!

It like he's glittering.

Boy: I just…
Felt a bit dizzy…

Chikahito: Shall I call an ambulance?

Boy: No…

If I just rest a bit I'll be fine…
…I've called for someone to get me.
-------------
!!! page 23
Chikahito: Then in that case let's a least go to a shadier spot.

FX: Slowly

FX: Inhaling

Chikahito: I'm sorry!

It's embarrassing, isn't it!

Then,
I'll support you.

Can you walk?

Boy: Yes.

…Thank you very much.

FX: Squeeze

Chikahito: How do you feel now?

Boy: I feel much better.
I'm sorry to trouble you.

Chikahito: Please don't worry about it.

Boy: You were on your way to someplace…

Chikahito: Buying tofu.

The store and my house are both really close,

Really, please don't worry about it.

Boy: Your house is close by?

Chikahito: Yes.
From yesterday, in that Kamishichiken.
-------------
!!! page 25
Boy: That's wonderful,
That you live in a place like this.

Chikahito: I think so too!

Though there are some troublesome things.

Boy: ?

Chikahito: No,
Well--

FX: Er, um

Chikahito: The people I live with are good people!

And it's a good place!

FX: Clench

Chikahito: Kyoto!!

Boy: …Can I
Ask your name?

Chikahito: I'm Takamoto Chikahito.

FX: Blushing

FX: Phone beeping

Boy: It seems they've come to get me.

I'm sorry to make you hang around.

FX: Beep

Chikahito: Shall I stay until they arrive?

Boy: No,
I really am fine.

Chikahito: Then, be careful!

Don't overdo it!

Boy: Sure,

Chikahito-san.

…Later.

Chikahito: Huh?

FX: Bowing

FX: Footstep

Chikahito: So there are boys that pretty around, huh.

Somehow he's a bit like Hana-san.

Are beautiful people gathering in Kyoto?

It's awesome,
Kyoto.

Retainer: How do you feel,

Iemitsu-sama?

!!! page 30
Iemitsu: That joke

Isn't very funny at all,
Jyûbê.
-------------
!!! page 31
[TN: The floral pattern on the top left of this page is hollyhock, the Tokugawa crest.]

Jyûbê: Properly, my name is Yagyû Mitsuyoshi.
I'm very sorry to say it so many times--

Iemitsu: That name isn't very amusing either.

Jyûbê: That you went so far as to feign illness to be able to get closer--
Was there something you wanted to obtain?

Iemitsu: Does it appear that I did?

Jyûbê: However,
It's certain that he's a resident of the Urashichiken.

Furthermore,
The one called Hana summoned him.
-------------
!!! page 32
Iemitsu: I know that.

That's why I went out of my way to leave Tokyo,
Ahead of the eyes and nose of the Urashichiken.

Well, no matter how close I get, they shouldn't be able to notice me.

[TN: he's literally about 50 feet from Kamishichken when Chikahito finds him.]

Iemitsu: No,
Even if they notice, it'd be correct to say it's pointless.

With the power of my adorable oni.
-------------
!!! page 33
Iemitsu: …I'm hungry.

Jyûbê: Which of you?

Iemitsu: Both of us.

But first I have to allow it eat before me.

Tenkai,
Encirclement.

FX: Whoosh
-------------
!!! page 34-35
Iemitsu: Now then.

Who you take as your prey will be amusing,

Mitsuha.

So, I have to say, I have a really hard time not reading Chikahito as bisexual.

Also, the warlords who we see reincarnated are clearly the ones who had unfinished business or disappointing careers: Akechi, Hidetsugu, Iemitsu even though he was of the first generation that didn't fight in the wars of unification, which preyed on him for his entire life.

Also, I have no idea what Kojyûrô's gender is, or about Jyûbé really. I do like the way CLAMP are mixing things up in the reincarnations.

Finally, while this blog post is an April Fool's joke, it gives you an idea of some of the weirdness that lingers around the edges of some so-called scholarly endeavors, to say nothing of pop culture representations, relating to Nobunaga. He has a titanically bad reputation, to say the least.

working on a little Gate 7 tour of Kyoto
You are an absolute legend, I get a few days there in October and really wanted to check the places out and be a complete CLAMP geek :D

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave in and made a map (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=213294866419817502455.0004a86d5bb55889fd362&msa=0&ll=35.017345,135.762863&spn=0.147616,0.250282).

[identity profile] khallandra.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I hope I get to see some of the places now :D

[identity profile] asaliah1116.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for your time and effort put into this. Now, I'm going off to read it along with the images and find out what the bloody hell they were talking about. XD

p/s: I think Chikahito's suspiciously swings both ways too...

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! I enjoy it, Kyoto is one of my favorite places in the world. :D

[identity profile] draxander.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much for your amazing translation! It's not easy to understand what's going on in Gate7 with all that historical background knowledge, but your useful links and comments really help a lot! :)

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear it!

[identity profile] crystal-moon975.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it means he's bi. You can admire people of your gender and be straight; I do it all the time.

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, of course!

But he does seem to do it more openly than other CLAMP protagonists I can think of (Watanuki always comes to mind, because they look somewhat alike), and in combination with him being the same--what's the word for it? spiritual orientation?--as Hana, it makes me wonder. And in my own personal reading experience, if he were just thinking that Iemitsu looks good, I'd have expected him to use a different word.

Though of course he's apparently under the influence of an oni, so who knows. But he doesn't think his own thoughts are strange, so…I don't know. Something to keep an eye on in future chapters.

[identity profile] crystal-moon975.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that is true. I keep forgetting me oogling pretty people does not mean everyone else does! XD

Does spiritual orientation effect sexual orientation? @-@ Maybe to CLAMP? Who knows... Either way, I kinda wanted to pet Iemitsu like a kitty. XD He actually reminds me of the blond guy in CLAMP School Detectives who's name escapes me... the one who also shows up in Piffle in Tsubasa?

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. I've been assuming that Hana being "mu" is related to zie being gender-neutral, but sexuality is something else entirely of course. Though zie seems indifferent to Date, I gotta say. (Or maybe it's just that I don't like Date, he seems pretty creepy to me, in a cute bondage-gear-wearing kind of way.)

Oh yeah, that dude! He was cute, I forget his name.

because I can't edit comments

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Though Chikahito is mu too and is pretty obviously gendered as male, so the effect of the mu orientation on gender and sexuality seems hard to draw firm conclusions about. On the other hand we're probably not going to get more data points than the two of them.

[identity profile] bluwim.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks a lot for another awesome translation :)

[identity profile] sjou.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I think the "天海" on page 33 is actually the name of the character. He's the monk Tenkai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenkai). :)

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you're right!

…I guess we've proven that Tenkai and Akechi weren't the same person.

Thank you very much for the pointer!

[identity profile] la-vie-noire.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! Also, isn't Jyuubei the woman? Because the last lines came kinda confusing when putting "Jyuubei" and "Woman" when the same character was saying these lines. ^^;

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you're right, somehow I managed to switch them. This makes much more sense now. Me and my stupid prior expectations. *goes to fix*

[identity profile] chibiyuuto.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks again! I'm trying REALLY hard to follow everything >.< Your links and notes really help, so double thanks for your efforts =)

Ah, reading GATE 7 always makes me hungryyy D=

[identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Fwiw, I actually think a fair number of Japanese readers will be confused too--there's a reason poor Chikahito is an avowed history nut who keeps having to infodump every other chapter.

And you're welcome, as always!
