starlady: (a sad tale's best)
Arguably, Valentine's Day is a medieval reimagination of that Roman holiday, so why not? Yes, that's right, this holiday was not invented by Hallmark.

On that note, what's Valentine's Day without bloodcake? I made this recipe with whole wheat pastry flour, which was accidental, but once I had frosted them, the cupcakes were surprisingly tasty. The first time I made this recipe the cake was too dry and the frosting recipe that accompanies it was a disaster, so this time I went store-bought frosting and cupcakes instead of layers and the result was much more pleasing. I have realized, though, that red velvet cake is best with chocolate frosting, contrary to cupcake/baking orthodoxy, so that is how I shall serve it from now on.

I was tempted to write, "I love you, even though you drive me crazy, which probably explains why you think I'm nuts" in my parents' card, but resisted the temptation virtuously. Happy Valentine's Day, all and sundry! Have some chocolate and think on the fact that spring is coming, if nothing else.
