Make SFWA a better and more supportive organization for writers who aren't white men?

Great! Amal el-Mohtar has called for the expulsion of racist blogger and author Theodore Beale, aka Vox Day, from SFWA, after Beale used a SFWA bot account to promulgate his racist, sexist rant specifically targeting N.K. Jemisin after her amazing Guest of Honor speech at Continuum in Australia. Screencaps at the link, warnings for extremely hateful language and threats. SFWA members can contact the Board via various links provided in el-Mohtar's post.

Support writers of color in SFF?

There are several ways to do so! John Scalzi announced this morning that, for no reason whatsoever, he would match donations to the Carl Brandon Society or the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund, up to $1000. That donation cap has been met, but several other people including Arachne Jericho and Justine Larbalestier and Scott Westerfeld have stepped up to continue the donation matching. Donations to Con or Bust, which provides assistance to fans of color to attend SFF conventions, are also being matched up to $1000. So donate today!

You also still have about 10 days to purchase Bloodchildren, the e-book anthology of Butler Scholars stories that is raising money for the Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund!

Support emerging LGBT authors?

My friend [livejournal.com profile] gchisom was accepted to the Lambda Literary Foundation's Emerging Writers Retreat, which gives emerging LGBT authors a one-week intensive writing workshop experience. She's fundraising to help cover the expenses, if you'd like to throw some spare cash her way!
