starlady: (run)
I ran the 10K in the Berkeley Half Marathon again today. The 2020 event was eventually delayed to February 2022, about a week after I got laid off; I started my new job a week ago, so there was a certain symmetry there.

The February event was, according to my spreadsheet, my second-worst split time since I started running in 2009: 1:14:10 total for a split time of 11:57. In fairness to me, I'd just been coming off six weeks unable to run at all because my hip flexors got too tight from sitting too much (I have since switched to mostly standing at my desk), and I replace my shoes every March so my shoes were also shot. But it was still disappointing.

My goal for today was to be faster, and I definitely felt that I was faster, but I was still disappointed in the time: 1:07:05 total for a split time of 10:48. In 2014 I ran Bay to Breakers (12K) in about 1:25:00, and I was really hoping to crack 10:30 split times. But on the other hand I did shave off 69 seconds per split in nine months, which is nothing to sneeze at.

I did successfully decline the race shirt, which seemed to bemuse the volunteers at the bib pickup on Friday night, but I have so many race shirts and I don't need any more. When the ones I have wear out I can get more pretty easily by signing up for more races. But apparently after running the event three times I qualify as a loyal runner, for which my reward was…a shirt, and a pin depicting Berkeley's infamous "nuclear free" signs. Well, I will treasure the pin.
