There's a scene in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle where one of the characters, in the midst of recounting his experiences in Manchukuo/Manchuria during the (Asia-Pacific) War, describes seeing a man be skinned alive. I nearly threw up, and for various reasons I think that was a very intentional (and politically motivated) effect on Murakami's part.
