starladySo this weekend I went to Minneapolis for Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits. It's the second that I've attended, as well as given a presentation in the "Junior Scholars" section. Since I had an actual visual component to my presentation, and I did not run over time, and people said they liked it, I am counting it a rousing success.
SGMS is a fun con (and I use the abbreviation deliberately, since it's neither a convention nor a conference). I'd say that last year was a bit better in terms of overall quality of the presentations, and sadly I missed the fashion show this year since my flight was delayed, but the presentations I did hear were interesting (particularly Susan Napier on Ponyo and Marc Hairston on Spice & Wolf), and it was good to see friends I hadn't seen in a while or since the last time, as well as to be among the geek tribe, as it were. Also, the special guest from Japan, Taniguchi Tomoko, was a riot (particularly compared with Yoshitomo ABe, who was last year's guest). She is an unreconstructed '70s anime and sff geek, and hearing her talk about life as a manga-ka ("Yes, many popular manga-ka die young, but I am not so popular so I am okay") was priceless. She had great pink cowboy boots, too. Interesting rumor of the con: That Disney secretly paid off Tezuka Productions over the whole lifting-The-Lion-King-from-Kimba thing, and that's why Tezuka Productions never sued.
Next year is the 10th anniversary, and Frenchy Lunning, who runs it, tells me that she's going to go all-out. I'm looking forward to it.
The only downside was having to get up at 5 this morning to make my redeye flight back to Jersey. Luckily that went about as smoothly as one could hope for, and I made it back home more or less in one piece. Eventually I should think about some food, and about getting a job. So it goes.
