Ohhhh that was satisfying. I knew as soon as it hit: The horrible thing about bereavement, he had learned, was that the person who was gone became so persistently present in their absence that I was going to enjoy this story tremendously, and I did. The dramatic irony is just so driving! Because if it's been two and a half years, Sherlock Holmes is just around the corner. It tinges the sadness with a lovely sense of anticipation, which then folds beautifully into the sexual tension between Watson and Irene.
