Tragedy must have arisen from something religious, though most scholars nowadays have given up on figuring out anything specific about its origins. To reintroduce Aristotle yet again, it's supposedly all about fear and pity and the human condition. So it would make sense to see the tragic hero as a sort of everyman. And maybe that's why Euripides was so radical - more of an emphasis on a particular character's inner psychology.
