Well, I wonder too how much we let our modern ideas about what is and isn't religious affect our views--the Olympics were held in honor of Zeus, like the dramas were held in honor of Dionysos, so does that mean that in Greece sport was religious? We observe such a strict boundary nowadays that I think we tend to overlook the probability that people viewed daily life more holistically in other periods, I think; that both the dramas and the games were staged in honor of the god doesn't mean quite what it would to do the same thing nowadays, I think.

(For more fun congruences, sumo in Japan grew out of religion too.)
