Just realized that last line should read "epic female hero opera of the 21stC", but heck, I'd take an epic gay female hero opera too.
The music was indeed fantastic.
I think afaik the closest opera has gotten to the epic gay opera of the 20thC would be Death in Venice. But at the risk of impugning Britten, that's not exactly the plot I'm looking for. Operatic romance is the plot of that opera.
