See, I really liked the fact that all of his stories are so science and math-y. And though everyone cites "Story of Your Life" for the emotional impact, what made the biggest impression on me wasn't the narrator's personal life but the heptapods' written language and how it embodied their worldview and what that meant for, well, everything. That was so cool!
But, yeah. Definitely not so much with the characterization.
And I don't even think that there's anything wrong with that; it's just...I don't know, if the characterization is going to be a minus I want the rest of the elements to pull their weight, and not all of these stories do that.
