Samurai Jack is actually a U.S. cartoon about a samurai (named Jack!) who is flung from Japan into the far future by the aforementioned evil demon Aku and fights to defeat Aku and to get home. I liked it a lot in high school; it has a very similar visual style in a lot of ways to this movie. The Triplets of Belleville is also pretty awesome.
Isn't the Book amazing? In the movie Brendan has to fight Crom Cruach for the monster's eye, which is a magnifying glass, so that he can finish all the minute illumination. The effort and skill that went into the Book are mind-boggling.
