I don't thing "Another Sunday" is really a typical effects-heavy vid, if there is such a thing. The purposefully-cheesy aspect is quite atypical, and I've heard vidders comment that it doesn't bear up well to repeated viewing (outside a group or con context, anyway).

It's increasingly common for vidders to use a lot of non-obvious effects, too, especially in the VividCon community where people are very aesthetically precise. If you look at the work of a vidder like Obsessive24 or Charmax, you'll see a lot of subtle work with color and layering etc -- and then there are vidders like Newkidfan or Lim, for whom "effects" doesn't quite seem like the right word for the role digital manipulation and animation plays in their work.

That said, from the little I know about AMVs I agree with the way you describe their different relationships to the source text.
