I am having a phone interview/chat with the house's point person tomorrow evening and am already slightly nervous.
I know it's Berkeley, and the rents are probably fairly insane, but have you thought about/looked into actually getting a place of your *own* own. As in, just getting an apartment? Whether it's Berkeley itself, or Oakland, or hell, even SF, there are a) bargains, and b) not having to deal with other people. Hell, I'm sure there are plenty of complexes around the area that are pretty much aimed at attracting funded grad/PhD students.
