Have you ever seen the 2004 documentary A State of Mind? It's about two young girls competing to participate in the Mass Games.
The mothers' interviews were what got to me the most. The one talks about trying to celebrate her eldest daughter's birthday by letting her have a full bowl of grain.
Also the amount of scrutiny they get for travelling *anywhere*. The government is obviously very afraid of people meeting up/getting out.
