I haven't seen that documentary, but I have heard of it. Demick's book definitely puts a lot of what you mention in a broader context--and she documents how people do indeed defy the system, too, which I like. Indeed, just about everyone who's survived has done so by deliberately and consciously rejecting the regime's ideology on some level.
