Uncovering Heian Japan is brilliant, and I think you'd really like it for what Lamarre says about the Kokinshu and the Man'yoshu in particular. Tomiko Yoda and John Wallace are brilliant too, I think. (Oh crap, I forgot to add Norma Field's book to the list!)
