starlady: Kermit the Frog, at Yuletide (yuletide)
[personal profile] starlady
I have three windows of Yuletide stories open at the moment, so I'm going to keep these recs on the quick and dirty side. I'm also trying to rec things that I haven't seen get much traction on the comms as yet. These are just the shorter stories; hopefully I'll have time to plow through the longer ones before the reveal.

Also, guessing game! As a reminder, I wrote three fics in two fandoms, both chromatic, both I've never written in before; as of this writing, none of my stories have been rec'd to the comms (which doesn't surprise me, really; I made a deliberate effort to offer the more obscure fandoms I could). And, you know, at least two of them seem really obvious to me, but that is because I'm the one living on the inside of my head. ^^

A Night in the Lonesome October - Roger Zelazny
The End of the Enlightenment - The game as it was played in, if I'm not mistaken, 1715. I have my suspicions as to who the players are.

Arcadia - Tom Stoppard
So We'll Go No More A-Roving - Hannah figures some things out, with the help of a tesseract.

Arts & Sciences (Philosopher) RPF
The Knight of Infinite Resignation - Four perspectives on Søren Kierkegaard's relationship with Regine, and its end. I love Kierkegaard a lot, and this is perfect.

Calvin & Hobbes
This Kid I Once Knew - Susie finds Calvin again in college, sort of. All the C&H fic this year has been brilliant:
The Roommate of +10 Confusion (Foxtrot/Calvin & Hobbes) - Jason is Calvin's freshman year roommate. Lucky Jason.
At Lunchtime, in the Wilderness (Calvin & Hobbes/Where the Wild Things Are) - Max meets Calvin and Hobbes at lunch.

Circle of Magic - Tamora Pierce
Role, Play - The beginning of Lark and Rosethorn's relationship.

Disney Princess Superheroes
A League of Their Own
Just Another Day in the Secret Base
The Trial of Snow White
you're gonna leave them all behind
The League of Extraordinary Princesses: B for Beauty
Disney Princesses, Assemble! - These were all Treats written for me, and they're all awesome.

The Effluent Engine - N.K. Jemisin
The Sugarcane Drive - Set after the story, and just as awesome as the original.

Eugene Onegin
Whither are ye banished? - Onegin and Lensky talk, or not, the night before the duel. It's been ages since I read this! And the poem-fic is brilliant.

Hark, a Vagrant!
The Squid Is a Metaphor - All the H,aV! fics this year are brilliant, but this one's my favorite because it has a) pirates and b) Wednesday the cat.

Heian Jidai RPF
On the Moonlit Road of Dreams - Sei Shônagon and Murasaki Shikibu team up to fight crime. 'Nuff said, really.

Hogfather/The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Ill-advised Skeletal Exchange Program - When Death switches places with his penpal Jack Skellington, putting things right is, as usual, up to Susan.

'Twas the Night… - Death and Jack Skellington run into each other on their rounds. Literally.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
Out of the Night: An Interview with the Mockingjay - post-canon, obviously, and makes the ending believable. Brilliant.

Gabriel Knight (computer game)
What Lies in Books - I'm not terribly familiar with the fandom, but you don't need to be to enjoy this, since it's a very subtle AU, and a cracking read.

K-20: Kaijin nijuu mensou den | K-20: The Fiend with 20 Faces
The Basics of Being a Lady - Bwahaha! Post-movie.

Princess Tutu
Inscribed on Glass Plaques - post-series, lovely and heartbreaking, AUGH.

The Prisoner
Down in the Ground - Yuletide always produces great fic for this fandom, and this is no exception. Harsh and surreal and just like the show.

Qing Hua Ci (music video)
The Summer Triangle - This is narrated by a vase. The funniest vase ever. Go read it now.

Sociology (Critical Theory) RPF
Many Forms of Resistance - C. Wright Mills and Michél Foucault confront the zombie apocalypse on a motorcycle. This is perfect.

Their Majesties' Bucketeers - L. Neil Smith
Two Out of Three Ain't Bad - Srafen's baroque sexual history, in chapters.

Threadless T-Shirts: We've Got Some Work to Do Now
You're Ready and You're Willin' - This is my gift story; Velma and Scooby learn to cope with the zombie apocalypse. Brilliant and sad and quintessentially Yuletide.

And finally, in the brilliant tradition of writing about Yuletide, With All Apologies to William Carlos Williams by Lanna Michaels. I'm still laughing.
