I've been through LAX three times, and while the last was a few years ago, I haven't heard that it's better, and it's honestly probably the ugliest and most unpleasant Big Airport I've ever been in. And with some of the worst food, etc. =\ I would recommend taking your own snacks and just finding a place to go sit and do translations/etc for your layover.
