I'm kind of fascinated by how well the symbolism ties in with the four gods in Chalion--spring as maidenhood, summer as motherhood, fall as youthful soldierhood, and winter as the father/justice. And you're totally right, Peter is the Soldier and Edmund is the Judge, which is contrary to the way the age-based stereotypes normally go within families.
