As far as I can tell from the little he says in his memoir and letters about how he would have liked things to be as opposed to how they were, he was against boarding schools entirely, and mildly against day schools-- the best period of his education was with an individual tutor who basically told him what to read, argued with him about what he'd read, and went away again.
