Hey, if you lived in Britain at the height of rationing, you'd be writing poetry about butter too! (And it's not as greedily obsessed with unobtainable foods as "Brideshead Revisited" - but wallowing in nostalgic memories of meals past is a minor feature of British literature of the period...)
