They did basically the same production at Salzburg a while back: I've seen the DVD, and when I saw the production stills from the Met I recognized it. Honestly, I didn't like the production design all that much- the way you capitalized the word Symbolic kind of sums up my feelings about it.
It's still an incredible opera and Violetta is an unbelievably beautiful role. And Act I of La Traviata is one of my favorite things ever, it's just so perfectly constructed.
