Um…it's mostly fascinating so far. It was written 20 years ago (and the fieldwork is 30 years old), so in some ways it's as much an archaeology as anything; some of what she describes I know is different now. But on the other hand the whole host/hostess club thing is not going away in Japan, and what she's said so far is indeed kind of depressing.
This reminds me, I totally need to bring up Ouran High School Host Club in class when we discuss this.
