I appreciated your point about the tyranny of the majority above; it's a very good one. I think my own emotional reading of national politics the past ten years or so, since I've been of voting age, is that it's been a tyranny of a plurality or even a minority, but the past ten years is, overall, a short span in our longer history.
But I do think that part of the cause of low voter turnout is people feeling like their votes don't matter, which isn't mathematically true but often feels that way. Lord knows I futilely voted a Democratic ticket in my town long enough, though I don't regret showing up.
