What did you think of the whole 'permission to hug' bit? After the whole Baby-Maker Inna Box routine last season, it sort of chafed. Amy was pretty passive in this in general, while Rory got a lot more agency than he typically does.
As far as River goes, I don't think the regeneration loss was at all necessary, but I'm guessing it is intended to serve as the 'vat of vanishing cream' David Tennant joked about for when they need Doctor #14. So I felt that was 2/2 in terms of strong women existing for the sake of what they give the men.
...That said, I was sort of tickled to see her use the same motion as the monk that does the same thing for Tom Baker's Doctor in Planet of Spiders.
