Well, ruby port is pretty sweet and most merlots are rather dry. You could probably do it, but I'd definitely taste and add more sugar if needed. Maybe think about combining the merlot and the sherry, actually, since sherry's also kind of sweet.
I actually wound up making it this time with 1/3 cup tawny port and 1/3 cup sangria, and it came out great, so it's not like no substitutions are acceptable. :)
