I appreciate getting to read your thoughts! and am also trying to do better about book blogging, lol. The problem of how to approach historical and social problems like sexism and slavery in "beloved" period settings does seem to me to be a thorny one, because the setting is such a palimpsest to begin with; most of us are coming to Rome, or wherever, through mediated sources, often dating back to our own childhoods, and the imagination roots back to those first encounters, before the mind became aware of the real facts of things.
