It's been on my mind lately that this year it's been ten years since I started running seriously. Playing violin is the only other non-fannish activity I've stuck with that long. I don't have a ton of conclusions about this--I do think it's helped with my mood and my energy levels over the years, yadda blah--but I am proud of myself for sticking with it. Running is a very cerebral activity in a weird way, because you're basically competing against yourself and your own lazy impulses, and I kept it up through a cross-country move, grad school, moving to Japan and then to Belgium, and then moving back and finishing my dissertation. Nice job, self. But also, credit where it's due: physical therapy and physio tape were essential at several points in the process. I ♥ physio tape.
I ran a 5K last month in 32:30, my first timed race in five years (thanks grad school), and it went well--I'm not as fast as I was five years ago, but I haven't backslid terribly far. (I went home and promptly made a spreadsheet of my split times, because I'm me.) I've signed up for another 5K in March and the same event's 10K next November. I'm of two minds about Bay to Breakers in May; we'll see.
I plan to redownload Zombies, Run!; I need to get a pair of running headphones--I think it'll be the around-head bone conduction ones, since my ears are mismatched and the earbuds always fall out of my ears, to say nothing of my extreme antipathy towards in-ear headphones. I've also added jumping rope to my normal workout routine; hopefully the increased cardio will help in running races as well. I had my first bout with plantar fasciitis a year ago, and surmounted it thanks to some very high profile shoe inserts, then promptly got another mild case this fall when I got new shoes and didn't put the inserts in immediately. Lesson learned. Onward.
