I've been on a Valdemar kick lately (read: since Sunday night), and as usual I am faintly disturbed by the level of abuse to which Mercedes Lackey subjects her characters. They are good books though, for the most part, although some of them are not. At any rate, of the books I haven't read before, I just finished Brightly Burning and Exile's Valor. BB was pretty forgettable, the only really interesting thing about it was the bond between Lavan and his Companion. Exile's Valor, however, was excellent--Alberich is an awesome character and, although anyone who's read almost any other Valdemar book would know the ending before it began, it was really well plotted. I was slightly non-plussed, however, by the introduction of "Herald-Chronicler Myste," who winds up Alberich's lover. Um, Mercedes Lackey's nickname is Misty. And the way she described Myste would not, I think, be entirely inaccurate applied to her. As a writer myself, I find putting your alter ego in bed with one of your characters to be slightly ishy, although I suspect that it's not entirely uncommon for an author to fall a little in love with one of his or her creations--William Faulkner and Caddy, Philip Pullman and Lyra. I guess we know who Lackey's favorite character is, however. That being said, though, however much Myste is or is not based in the reality of her author, she's a great character and it's a shame she's not in the other Valdemar books that were written earlier but are set later. I do confess to being disappointed, however, that Eldan wasn't in this book, as he is one of my favorites.
So, as you can guess, I haven't been doing much. I did go see Nicole's production of "Beauty & the Beast," which was good overall, although I question the entire musical in the first place, if it's not Julie Taymor's "The Lion King" why not just watch the movie? I am, however, going to Boston this weekend.
