I didn't even have strong feelings about stormpilot before I started this vid. But you know what? It is a good ship! But I got so annoyed at the Star Wars discourse earlier this year that I decided to make this vid, and you know what? I had fun! Poe is Leia and Finn is Han and Oscar Isaac and John Boyega have very good faces!

I adored this show, which combines a very candid look at Emily Dickinson's life with an extremely weird, 2019 sensibility and puts her being queer front and center. Vidding the two aspects of the show--the love story between Emily and Sue, and the batshit stuff that happens in it--was a challenge and I'm not sure how well I did it, but I had a lot of fun.

I got to thinking about this vid about a year ago; I loved the original, and I was sad that it was no longer available online. So I decided to remaster it myself.

Here's what I said about it in the VidUKon con book:

[personal profile] skywaterblue's vid was very popular when it first came out, and it's certainly one that I've returned to repeatedly over the years. At some point a year or two ago I realized that the original vid was no longer available due to her death, and after I saw the DS9 documentary "What We Left Behind" last year, I decided to remaster the vid in HD so that viewers could continue to (re)discover it. This remaster definitely puts my own stamp on the vid, as I didn't crop anything and I altered a few clips and cuts for various reasons. (Also, so much color grading.) Overall the vid hits somewhat different in 2020 now that the original Trek timeline lives and the AOS films' future is in doubt, but I think the message about beginnings and endings in a beloved franchise resonates no matter which timeline we're in. LLAP.

This vid is a remaster, but right off the bat I made some choices that differentiate it from the original in some fairly major ways. First and foremost, I chose not to crop the various sources to match some unitary ideal (which one?); skywaterblue cropped to the widescreen DVD of the Star Trek 2009 movie, but to me the patchwork nature of Star Trek is one of the things that I love about it, and also those shots that were framed for 4:3 (or widescreen, in the case of DS9) should be what they were meant to be. This vid plays that up by including some of the HD remastered footage of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from the DS9 documentary What We Left Behind; if you watch the side by side vid comparison, you'll see that I actually chose some slightly different clips at a few points to make that possible. There are also a few points where the original vid had stray or blank frames, or some very short clips which I excluded in order to spend more time on the more important shots. I spiced up the Captain Proton footage with a reverse iris transition, straight out of Flash Gordon, but I ignored a lot of the apparently Vegas-induced two second transitions between clips. I also did not replicate the old magnetic tape splice transitions.

There's also quite a lot of color grading in this vid. I matched all of the DS9 clips to the What We Left Behind HD shots, as those clips' color grading was personally supervised by the DP for S3-S7 of the show. (I didn't match the TNG shots to anything, as they are all from the Blu-Ray restoration. Having no standard for Voyager, I left those clips alone too.) I also matched all of the Blu-Ray footage from the TOS and TNG movies to the DVD footage that skywaterblue used in her vid, as this thread from TrekCore on Twitter pointed out just how ghastly the color grading is on the Blu-Ray transfers. (Okay, it could be worse. But it's uniformly that paler washed out blue in the original movies, while the TNG movies make everyone look orange.) Very late in the game I also noticed that the aspect ratio was off in the "Trials and Tribbleations" clips and managed to fix it, which was gratifying. All remaining errors and infelicities are, of course, my own. LLAP.

My Festivids assignment, for [archiveofourown.org profile] sandalwoodbox

I didn't grow up watching The Dark Crystal, but I knew I was going to be into the prequel show, and I was. It's weird and slow-paced and breaks new ground in puppetry while telling a dark story about apocalyptic climate change and climate denialism. The only possible song for a vid about it was Vienna Teng's scathing take on climate negotiations. I'm reminded of Greta Thunberg's speech at the latest (failed) round in Madrid: “Well I am telling you there is hope. I have seen it. But it does not come from governments or corporations. It comes from the people.”

This is Tarantino's best movie; it's also the last Tarantino movie that I've seen. I think in this movie his problems and quirks as a director--the violence, the racism, the sexism--are either diminished or harnessed by the subject matter so that they work towards an actually morally defensible and enjoyable whole. Which is killing Hitler and a bunch of other Nazis, all of whom deserve it.

This vid is also what happens when my Good Omens-induced Queen obsession collides with my Equinox assignment. This was really the only song I considered for the vid, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I think there's an additional frisson of resonance between the fact that Freddie Mercury was gay and the Nazi persecution of queer people, which also pleases me.

I was determined to make a vid for Sparkle Motion, since I'd made one for Club Vivid the last few years, but I didn't have a pre-existing concept so I picked this song off the list. And then I promptly had no time because my panel premiere dropped into my lap. So this vid is, well, not the most accomplished thing I've ever made; I want to specifically thank [personal profile] bironic for reminding me that "people will be drunk," which gave me the temporary confidence boost necessary to push through and finish. Done is better than perfect.

All that said, I didn't watch it for two months, and it's nowhere near as obviously terrible as I thought it was when I first finished it. I also relearned, by not clipping, the importance of clipping to my process. So that was a useful reminder.

I've been thinking about this vid for a long, long time--probably at least five years. I had hoped to be able to premiere it at Vividcon, and I thought my skills as a vidder were finally close to what was necessary when I heard that Vividcon was ending. When [personal profile] fairestcat put out a call for premieres for songs of resistance as vidded to Vienna Teng, I knew that this was the best chance I was going to get.

The vid comes at the concept of the vidshow somewhat slantwise, I think (I say, not having watched the vidshow as of this writing), but I am very proud of it. Going back to these movies was an exercise in "WTF were we all thinking?" in many ways; I think really only The Dark Knight holds up, and its politics are extremely questionable. But not as questionable as The Dark Knight Rises, which restages A Tale of Two Cities as a conflict between police and thieves. Well, I know which side I'm on. Bruce Wayne only thinks he does.

Technically, I pulled out all the stops and used 1080p source for all of the movies. I am never doing that again; it wasn't worth the time it took (I had to export the timeline every time I wanted to view it, as my computer, which has never had a problem with vidding before, didn't have enough memory to play back the timeline end to end for longer than about ten seconds) relative to the increase in quality. But it does look pretty! And I am not sad about the different aspect ratios from Christopher Nolan shooting in IMAX; I just wish I had had the IMAX version of TDK too.

I made this vid for a lot of reasons, but the ones that really got me motivated were the in-jokes. If you spot either of them, the Force truly is with you. I also color corrected a lot of the footage, and honestly I'm pretty pleased with the result.

I actually found this song thanks to the gifset I linked above, because I was curious about the words, and I liked it okay once I heard it, okay enough that I decided it would be cool to make an actual Star Wars vid to the song. And while I love the Jedi, I decided that I wanted to make a vid that was not about the Jedi at all. I probably should have tried to integrate animated clips into this vid, but I was working under a pretty tight deadline, and I was very happy that I got to show off what I consider to be some overlooked characters and moments, such as Holdo, and Nien Nunb, and Padmé's storyline in TPM. Also, you know, Sabé. (Justice for TPM!) And finally, I guess you know it's a Star Wars vid by me when it makes extensive use of the prequels deleted scenes.

Lyrics on AZ Lyrics

I loved SeaQuest DSV with all my heart when I was eight years old and I watched almost all of the first season as it aired. And then in the second season they axed half the cast (including one of my favorite characters, Dr. Westphalen) and moved it against Lois and Clark, and I didn't watch it as much. It jumped the shark almost literally at the start of season three with a timeskip and casting a mean man as the captain and that was that. I hadn't watched any of it since it first aired twenty-five years ago, but I couldn't pass up the chance to revisit it when I saw it on the list of nominations. This vid very intentionally only uses footage from the first, best season of the show, and it mostly focuses on the bits that stuck with me all these years. I leaned all the way into the 90s theme and used my one of my favorite Enya songs, even after I realized that I'd been hearing the lyrics wrong.

It was deeply fun to go back to this show, and also bittersweet. Roy Scheider and Jonathan Brandis, who were the heart of the whole story and were both quite good in it, are both dead, and only Ted Raimi did anything I've ever heard of after this. The show could have been great, and it's painful to watch all the parts that were actually quite good, especially for the time, and know that the production actively chose not to double down on them. And the future that the show envisioned never happened: setting aside all the strange technology assumptions, which are understandable, the world of seaQuest still has ice in the Arctic in 2019. I can only assume that Al Gore became president in 2001 and that catastrophic climate change was averted, unlike our current timeline where we are barreling toward it at full speed and the Great Barrier Reef is bleaching to death as I write this. Even Darwin wouldn't play the same now as he did then, given what we now know about the dolphin propensity for sexual assault. I wish I had better tidings; it's crazy what we could have had. It's crazy what we are preparing to accept. Right this minute, the future can still be changed--but not without collective action from all of us.

I have so many feelings about Sherlock Holmes. It was one of my first fandoms in many ways (I read the complete Holmes corpus when I was eight), and I still identify with Holmes almost painfully. When the first Downey & Law movie came out in 2009, it was exactly what I needed at that point in my life, and along with Star Trek it was my entry back into English-language fanworks online. I wrote a lot of fanfic for Holmes, and I started thinking about this vid idea at some point--certainly it's been on my vidding playlist since before the second movie came out in 2011.

I always had the idea and the tagline, upcycled from The X-Files, about fighting the future; the second movie brings out that element even more clearly than the first one did, and in the first it was fairly overt. (The persistent slight anachronisms in fact start in the first movie too; they're also made clearer in the second movie.) But what rewatching the second movie brought home to me is how much the movies are presenting Holmes and Watson as a partnership: they are equals and complementary, and they're not very effective without each other. Like all great partnerships, it's founded on absolute trust, as well as their obvious love for one another. And as I went on making the vid I realized that that was the other half of the story about technology, and progress, and a war that cannot be prevented, only delayed. "So all life is a great chain, the nature of which is known whenever we are shown a single link of it."

I don't think I've seen this movie since I saw it in the theater in 2004, but watching it again brought it all back--the fear, the paranoia, the despair of watching most of the society around me fall into lockstep on a pointless war that would kill millions. Yet it's impossible to watch the movie now and not think that hey, it's not so bad, as the hostile interests only suborned the vice presidential candidate, and not the presidential candidate himself, and he didn't go willingly. I'm not sure how much of that made it into the vid, but it was on my mind through every second, partly because of the song choice. Double Negative is a stunning album, a cry of rage and despair over what has happened to the country since 2016, and this was the only song I ever considered for the vid.

In terms of editing, I wanted the vid to echo the claustrophobic and wrong feeling of the movie's cinematography; especially in the first half, I tried not to care too much about the fine timing of certain clips, and I never did explain who exactly was surveilling Marco, or who conceals his role in the assassination at the end. It seems fitting, in an unfortunate way, that this vast story of corporate wrongdoing focuses in the end on a few key individuals. I'd bet that the executives in charge got off with a slap on the wrist.

I love The Good Fight. I loved The Good Wife too, but The Good Fight is even better: better characters, sharper politics, less nonsense with men, and much more suited to my mood in these times than The Good Wife, whose protagonist I didn't like very much by the end, unlike the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee. And when I first started listening to this album, I thought the song and the show would go well together.

A year later, I'm pleased with this vid, despite the very many content warnings I had to put on it. It's kind of funny (and I don't mean funny ha ha) that I didn't really realize how many of them there were until I sat down to list them out. It's all just the way we live now in 2018. I will say, as much as I like the vid and what it does, a show about lawyers does not necessarily make for the most dynamic clips from which to choose. I hadn't originally intended to include the second season (I had originally intended to finish the vid while the second season was still airing), but it became necessary when I realized that I had already used just about all the suitable scenes in the first season. I like the vid as it is now, long courtroom drama bridge and all, but there was a lot of switching things around to make it more dynamic. The technical aspect also presented some difficulties; you'll notice that not all the clips are the same size. But it's mostly not too noticeable, though I do hope to go back and make a remastered version without logos once the show comes out on Blu-Ray.

I love Star Wars Rebels, and though the strength of my feelings about Kanan and Ezra surprised me, I knew that I loved the show's female characters from the beginning. Hera, Sabine, and Ahsoka are all the heroes of their own stories, and they're all different women who do very different things for the Rebellion--and they all live to see the fall of the Empire. Ahsoka gets the Kendrick verse because, as a former Jedi Knight (as the Bendu calls her in an unfilmed scene), she walks a different path than the other members of the space family.

Hello, my name is Electra, and I like Star Wars. A lot.

You will note that one of the tags on my reblog of the above gifset is "it works on multiple levels omfg," which…is what this vid does. I ship the prequel OT3, and in a weird way this is probably as close as I will ever get to trying to make a prequel OT3 vid. (It already contains about 80% of the shots in the entire three movies in which all three of the main characters are in the same frame.) I love them, and this vid is about the end of everything. Sixty years later in-universe and people are still fighting the war that resulted because these three people couldn't get it together.

As you can probably tell from this vid, I have a weird Hamilton ship too; let's just say that if I were to rewrite it in space, it would include Alexander/Angelica as well as the more popular Hamilton ships. So it wasn't a difficult choice to make Obi-Wan the Angelica/POV character here, just like it wasn't a difficult choice to cut the last verse about Eliza's future, which…doesn't exist for Padmé. (The greatest injustice and worst canonical fate for any character in the saga, and those are the facts.)

Technically, I think they need to do a new 4K scan of the original ROTS film print, because there are parts where the current Blu-Ray doesn't look so good, particularly in comparison to Rogue One (bonus points for spotting the one shot from that movie in this vid). It would be nice if they could also re-release the original DVD deleted scenes when they do that, because working with those clips in this vid was not thrilling. I enhanced them as much as I dared before they got too grainy, which was not a lot, and you can totally tell. ANH, by contrast, looks pretty great on Blu-ray, and Alec Guinness' performance is amazing.

May the Force be with you. And for the sake of the galaxy, tell people you love them before you amputate their limbs and leave them to burn to death on a hellfire planet.

I watched all of Star Wars Rebels over the last year or so. I started out not caring about Ezra Bridger. Before the final episodes aired, I would have told you that I still didn't really like him. It wasn't until I started sobbing halfway through the last episode and didn't stop until well after it ended that I considered that I might actually feel differently. I love them all so much, including Kanan and Ezra, and this vid is about them be(com)ing Jedi together.
