xxxHOLiC 160 translation

Got a guy friend of mine to buy the magazine in my stead today. Then all of us had fun mocking the other comics in the rag (I'd be interested in hearing Kodansha's rationale for publishing HOLiC in YM, and Chobits before that. Chobits is a bit more YM-ish, but if I had to speculate, I'd guess it's an attempt to boost the mag's circulation). Link to the scanned pages can be found here thanks to the good
scottishrefugee, who volunteered to scan.

"Please...take care of Kimihiro-kun."
He's not alone anymore,
he doesn't want to be alone anymore.
[02]
Doumeki?: Thank you for the meal today.
Fortune-teller: Not at all, it's mutual.
Thank you for the delicious sake.
You're a drinker too, Shizuka-kun, I see. Next time we'll use some of my treasured aged sake.
Doumeki: Then I'll bring awamori. [TN: Awamori is rice brandy. High proof.]
WatanukI: Will they just drink that and talk alcohol again?
Kohane: Here.
FX: Smooth
Give this to Yuuko-san and Mokona-kun.
Watanuki: Thanks.
They'll be pleased.
Kohane: I hope so.
[03]
Watanuki: Because it was so good,
When Yuuko-san learns that just he and I ate it, I wonder what sort of fate we'll meet. Mokona too.
Kohane: I'm glad.
Will you teach me again?
Cooking.
Watanuki: Of course.
So that you can let your mother eat it too.
Right.
[04]
Kohane: ...Yeah.
[05]
Doumeki: ...However,
That mother really has forgiven that girl living apart from her.
Watanuki: I heard she was persuaded by the old lady and Kohane-chan.
It seems it took a while, but
In the end, she shut up and let go of her hand.
Kohane-chan really has grown able to smile a lot.
Doumeki: Yeah.
[06]
Watanuki: That's why I'm certain her mother will change as well.
Since Kohane-chan has changed that much.
FX: Sudden stop
Doumeki: ...That girl--
She had a hunch about giving the balloon to her mother.
[07]
Watanuki: Why?
Doumeki: That girl,
If possible, she wanted to repay it to you.
Watanuki: Since it was Kohane-chan's,
It's fine if Kohane-chan gave it to the person she wanted to give it to.
[08]
Doumeki: ...If that had been there, [TN: "Balloon" is being read "that."]
When something happened to you, she said it might have been able to save you.
Watanuki: ...I've made her worry, haven't I.
Kohane-chan.
Doumeki: .....
Watanuki: ...You know,
[09]
I was always thinking that
"I have to be here."
I was also thinking that it was because my parents died, and I was the only one left, but
Somehow, I've come to have a different feeling.
[10]
Doumeki: ...Different how?
Watanuki: Dunno.
'Cause I don't remember.
[11]
Doumeki: What d'you mean?
Watanuki: That's how it is.
But,
Even if I don't remember,
[12]
As long as there are people who remember about me,
I've come to think that I want to be here.
The fact that Watanuki says that he wants to be where he is, coupled with Kohane's unmistakeable look of foreboding when she says that she hopes Yuuko and Mokona will be happy, merely reinforces the obvious, that there is stormy weather ahead.

Date: 2008-06-30 18:03 (UTC)It does seem to be heading for stormy waters. Poor Watanuki, he has sorta doomed himself by voicing out his want to live.

Date: 2008-07-02 00:53 (UTC)I only wish that Watanuki's doomed future isn't foreshadowed in each new chapter we get. The more doomed of a character he seems, the sadder I get. :(
But I guess it's still a good thing that he wants to live.
