"He is not your sibling. He is you yourself."

[02]

[03]
Yuuko: Here
Seems all right.

No.

Here alone must be protected.

[04]
Yuuko: Until the coming day.

[05]
FX: Smooth

Yuuko: The watch Watanuki found in former times
Was a replica, but

This is the only
True "Staff of the Stars."

The thing that Sakura-chan, who inherited the magic that Clow spun,

Left as a price.

[06]
FX: Smoothly

Yuuko: A thing that was one
Was split into two.

For the sake of those beloved children.

Watanuki was born
When Shaoran wished to turn back time.

Another Shaoran.

[07]
Yuuko: The same as the egg that Princess Sakura brought back,

A thing that should be one will become two.

Become two different things.

[08]
Yuuko: Those eggs.

One was born in just the manner the person who raised it wished.

The other cannot be born at all.

But, it was given a very important role.

Shaoran and Watanuki.

FX: Rustle

Their names and
Those appearances were mistaken.

That is what their parents wished.

So that both
Would not be erased.

FX: Click

[09]
Yuuko: Shaoran changed his appearance,
And his name.

He entrusted him to that name, and kept that child hidden. [TN: "Name" is here read "full name."]

The reason for reading Watanuki's name as "Watanuki" is
Taking the "wata" from "a padded cotton kimono."

It's an old technique.
So that children can't be caught by ghosts or plagues, they are dressed in a kimono with the cotton padding removed, and the removed cotton padding becomes the scapegoat.

[10]
FX: Twist

Yuuko: Watanuki Kimihiro.

Even so, so that that child can be protected,

I included his birthday in the midst of that alias.

Because names and birthdays are important things.

[11]
Yuuko: This picture too.
What is written here is the name his parents really gave him.

That child doesn't know.

Because of that, his location can't be sniffed out by Fei Wong.

Though he was able to exist without it being used.

[12]
Yuuko: But,
That child's existence is provisional, and dangerous.

Since his existence ought not to be there in the future.

That child himself is conscious of that.

FX: Click closed

In his heart and his body, even without his memories.

And,
On the path that was divided into two,

That his parents sacrificed themselves in a world wherein he existed as well.

That's why he thinks all the more that "I have to be here."

So there we have it. I'm sad we're still not getting to see Shaoran and Sakura's faces, above and beyond the fact that they're dead.

P.S. Has Yuuko been reading FMA? The watch motif was interesting (and a nice little tie-in to the very beginning of the manga).

P.P.S. More about Watanuki's name: "Wata", as it explains above, means "cotton [padding of a kimono]" in Japanese. "To remove" is "nuku." Thus Watanuki's name is literally "removed cotton," as well as "April 1st," an alias that has important information encoded in it (but interestingly enough, his name is written "April 1st," making his scapegoat alias the hidden meaning).

Still questioning the mother that could name her child Scapegoat, even as an alias.

...though I really like that Watanuki's version of the Explanation has a folklore spin to it. Fits in nicely with the rest of the series.

Also, extremely concerned that Yuuko doesn't care that the shop is disintegrating, so long as the storeroom holds.

I liked the folklore tinge too, which is why I went with "scapegoat" instead of "substitute" or something, since it has more antique connotations. Actually it also makes me think of "The Lottery."

Makes me think that he and Nobody Owen could have a nice long chat with each other.

I'm pretty sure it refers to Jr. before the time rewind, i.e. before he first went to Clow country.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one to which the watch reminded of FMA. Another thing in xxxHolic and TRC that reminds me of FMA is that you have to present a price equivalent to your wish in order to have it granted. It is the same as the Law of Equivalent Exchange in FMA. I wonder if it's really a result of Clamp being influenced by FMA.

There are a lot of magic systems like that.

Pratchett's Discworld works that way (his Tiffany/Roland remind me a lot of Doumeki/Watanuki in a weird way).

Because it is in Pratchett going back a couple decades, it makes me wonder if there is a prior source all three are lifting from.
