[livejournal.com profile] naominovik proves once again how awesome she is, and says a number of things much better than I could, in this post, but I would just like to reiterate for myself that outing people in any context, no matter what aspect of a person is being outed, is wrong on many, many ethical and moral levels. A fellow Ole makes an ass of himself in the comments to her post; all I can say is, not all of us are clueless, and some of us who are, are at least trying to rectify our ignorance, and the world. But some people apparently don't change.

At this point in my life I am very much one sf/f fan in the crowd, but even as one fan in the crowd, I can and will re-dedicate myself to reading the genre I love with intent and with ethical awareness, keeping the incipient whitewashing of the genre in the forefront of my mind. I am not a PoC, but I never want to be anything but an ally. If I make an ass of myself along the way (which is very probable, as I am unfortunately in the habit of doing that), so be it, and I welcome any and all respectful criticism; any discomfort I may feel is very much beside the point.
