starlady: Quorra fights CLU's black guard programs (for the users and for me)
TRON: Legacy. Dir. Joseph Kosinski, 2010.

I saw this with [personal profile] spaiku, and we thought it was pretty damn awesome. Not quite mind-blowing, mind you, but the music and the visuals are gorgeous, and the script and the actors pull their weight. If every Hollywood film were this good, cinema would be in much better shape than it is.

I saw at least one person on Twitter compare this movie to The Matrix, but that's just not true: it's clearly original Star Wars, by way of Attack of the Clones (except, you know, without the epic crappiness of that movie). I really thought all the characters were great, and I actually liked Sam--perhaps it's because by the time the movie starts he's 27, but he's far more chill and less whiny than most of the son characters who've lost their fathers in mainstream cinema. Disney still hates mothers, of course, but Quorra was pretty awesome, too, and I liked the thematic heft of her curiosity about our world, as opposed to CLU's avarice. Really the movie was quite successful at setting up a series of binaries and mirrors and triads among the characters, which it carried off and resolved deftly.

Also there was Bruce Boxleitner! And really, just amazing, amazing visuals, and perfect, perfect music by Daft Punk. I was satisfied.
